Check out this episode of "What's Up With Downes?" for my video highlights of the Salute To Urban Professionals, the 2011 NV Awards:

On Saturday, October 29th the illustrious Alvin Ailey Dance Theater was buzzing with sweet sounds of honor and music. An amazing audience came together to honor a select few shining stars in business.

The NV Awards 2011 was a night of great prestige in the urban professional
community; the black tie affair brought together professionals and entrepreneurs from all areas in
business, entertainment and the arts. Host Daymond John (ABC's Shark Tank), and Kemberly
Richardson (ABC's Eyewitness News) were the perfect team with their witty banter and
influential stories to present the honorees with their awards in the intimate setting of the theater.
The ceremony opened with the poised Alvin Ailey dancers and closed with the angelic voice of
the young Pop/Opera singer, Charisse Mills. Guests were in great spirits despite the early winter
weather, they sipped creative cocktails from sponsor, Grey Goose, enjoyed delicious hord'ourves
from a private caterer and desserts by Tonnie's minis. Post reception is where the fun began and
everyone let loose on the dance floor to the tunes of DJ Jon Quick. Overall, the night was one
filled of inspiration and surely one that will be unforgettable to those who attended.

Prosperity Consciousness During Financial Fear.

It is important during this time of financial fear to retain your prosperity consciousness.

US stock index futures pointed to a slightly lower open on Wall Street on Friday following a traumatic day across global stock markets as investors sold off over fears the European debt crisis was spreading to Spain and Italy and economic data out of the US pointed to a slowdown in growth in the world’s largest economy.

The Financial Advice:

Don't make any rash moves.

Sit it out.

The Prosperity Consciousness Advice:

You create your prosperity no matter what the economy.

Moving Forward:

With that said I will continue today to focus on my 12 month business plan.  I will focus on the best possible outcome.

Fatherhood: President Obama's Good Morning American Interview [VIDEO]

Good Morning America reporter Robin Roberts, interviewed President Obama. With Father's Day drawing near, the president answered questions about fatherhood submitted to him via video from members of the public.

Fatherhood Quotes From Black Celebrity Dads

The questions came from, among others, a Little League player, a father serving in the military in Afghanistan, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.
Obama and his wife, Michelle, 47, have two daughters, Sasha, 10, and Malia, 12.

Samuel L. Jackson Reads "Go The F*** To Sleep" On Letterman [VIDEO]

Akashic Books and Audible.com snagged the actor, Samuel L. Jackson, to read the hottest property in the publishing world at the moment: "Go the F--- to Sleep." On Thursday night, Jackson stopped by "The Late Show with David Letterman" and read an excerpt of the book and wow, no one can deliver a line quite like him.

Are Our Kids Thinly Disguised Monsters

Written by Rutgers professor Adam Mansbach and illustrated by Ricardo Cortés, "Go the F--- to Sleep" is described as a "children's book for adults." During its marketing campaign where PDF copies were distributed via email, it became a viral sensation.

Is Social Networking Bad For Your Child

Originally scheduled for publication this October, the book hit No. 2 on Amazon.com's bestseller list by April and was quickly released.

Born out of a Facebook status update, Mansbach has said that when his daughter Vivien was an infant, it would often take hours for her to fall asleep. Exhausted and exasperated, Mansbach posted this as a note on Facebook: "Look out for my forthcoming children's book, Go the -- to Sleep."

Check out the video of Samuel L. Jackson reading "Go The F*** To Sleep" On The David Letterman Show.

Holly Robinson-Pete Supports Upcoming NYC Event "Genius Of Autism" [VIDEO]

Recently, I had the honor of learning more about autism from my Yoga student and friend, Michel Pierce Burns.  She shared with me her son's book "Dawson" (The Extraordianry Discovery of an Autistic Child's Innermost Thoughts and Feelings www.dansonbook.com

Danson was invited to the White House because President Obama got a copy of his book. After he and Michele got in through security, they had to wait a considerable amount of time until they could have a private audience and picture with the President and First Lady.  By that time, and given that large crowds and Danson don’t really mix, his senses were overwhelmed, and the Obamas walked in just as he was scratching Michele in the face. The Obamas were very calm and understanding as both Danson and Michele were weeping, and hugged them.

(Pictured to the left - Michele Pierce Burns, Holly Robinson-Pete, Michael Burns at the National Autism Conference November 2010)

Actress, author, activist, and philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete's son, RJ's autism was diagnosised 10 years ago and she has been consistant in bringing awareness to the public.

Holly runs the nonprofit HollyRod Foundation, founded in 1996 during her father’s battle with Parkinson’s Disease, to help improve the quality of life of people plagued by a disease or disorder. After Holly’s son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism at age 3, hollyrod4kids was formed to focus on improving children's lives too.
